Colorado Winter Camping Location

Post by aleks_miesak » Tue Jan 20, 2009 6:00 pm

Ed,

I don't know if you remember me, I met you on the Dream Lake trail this past Thanksgiving weekend. I finally purchased your IceBox and am ready to go try it out. Unfortunately, there isn't much snow on the east side of the Divide (thanks global warming...) and I'm stumped about good locations. Any ideas? We live in Denver and are willing to drive a few hours to get the good snow. Also, since I'm a photographer I'd prefer a spot with some interesting sunrise/sunset photo ops.

Thanks a lot!

Aleks

The geologist. Welcome to the forum.
The Bear Lake road gets one close to plenty of snow for igloos.
Canyons running east/west are the good ones for sunrise/set pictures. Most tall barren features have a drift on the leeward side unless the cliff is right up to the top. It can be hard wind drift which makes it more work but the views are great.
I'm looking for someone to go up with the next two weekends.
How far in and how much vertical gain are you thinking? How's your backcountry navigation?

HAHA... glad you remembered :)

We're (my fiance and I) planning on going this weekend. We're willing to go up pretty high as long as we're out of avalanche danger. If we can tag along with you that would be great to get some on-the-spot tips on our building technique. We should be fine hiking up to 5 miles (as long as we have enough time to build our shelter and I get to set up and shoot sunset) and elevation isn't an issue. I am pretty good with topo maps and a compass, part of being a geologist I guess ;)

To bad it was so overcast while we were there. Maybe it'll be better next time.
Here's a couple of Alek's pictures from the trip, I forgot my camera in the car. Thanks Aleks.
The night shots are always special:

It was just below freezing and the snow was melting on us resulting in all of us getting pretty wet:

Heh, then I forgot to tuck my beard away until it was to late:

A good time was had by all!
